Synopsis Femme Fatale ()
At the manor of home of movie director and writer Desmond Williams, Desmond poisons a cup of tea and then takes it to his elderly wife, Lili Lita. He says that he'll be working on his new screenplay, and as he goes the couple exchange declarations of love.Desmond watches as young actress, Tina Larson, drives up to his manor. He opens the door before Tina can knock, saying he didn't want her knocking to wake up Lili. Desmond leads Tina in and confirms that she didn't tell anyone that she was coming there or told anyone that he's working with her. He takes Tina into his screening room, takes out a film reel of his 1959 film "A Scandalous Woman", and says that in it he showed the world true magic. Desmond insists that Lili, who starred in the movie, had true character.
After putting the reel on a projector, Desmond explains that he created the character of Glenda, a gun moll, for Lili,, and Glenda was with gangster Eddie Dugan, played by Ronald Redwood. He starts up the film and sits behind Tina. Together they watch the movie, with features a much younger Lili than her current version. The movie was written and directed by Desmond.
Near the end of the movie, two of Eddie's gunsels bring Eddie Lili's earring, and say that they found it in his room, in his bed. Glenda comes in, and Desmond tells Tina to watch. In the film, Eddie confronts Glenda and asks how it went. She says that she came back because Eddie is the only one who could give him a light. Desmond tells Tina to show him she's as talented as Eddie and shoves her up into the projector light.
Tina finds herself in the film, with all of the other characters seeing her as Glenda. Meanwhile, the film character of Glenda appears in the screening room and tells Desmond that Tina doesn't have a clue how to play the character. As Glenda begs for help and Eddie slaps her around for "betraying" him, Glenda and Desmond kiss. In her room Lili wakes up when she hears Tina crying.
In the film, Tina pleads for help. The other characters play their roles and recite their dialogue no matter what she says or doesn't say, while in the real world Desmond and Glenda have sex on the screening room couch. Later, a crying Tina drives away, with the two gunsels in pursuit and shooting at her. The film ends with a shootout between policemen and the gunsels, with Tina caught in the middle. Glenda begs Desmond not to make her go back, but the film ends with Tina's death and Glenda disappears and appears in the movie where she is. She does her final death scene and Desmond watches, dismayed.
The next day at Curious Goods, Jack gets up and finds Micki working on the books. He admits that he got in late and was out with Johnny, and explains that he was teaching Johnny how to play chess. Micki heard from Johnny that they were watching "hot videos". Jack says that they were chess videos, and Micki tells him that six actresses have disappeared in the last month. She's checking the manifest for movie and film-related antiques.
At the manor, Lili asks Desmond how his screenplay is coming. He says that he's not as inspired as she was, and Lili suggests that he stop writing because he can't recreate the past. Desmond says that he isn't sure, and tells Lili that he's been invited to his retrospective of his works. Lili readily agrees and jokingly warns him to look out for young girls.
That night at a theater, Johnny goes with his date, Erin. She's a film student and tries to educate Johnny. Johnny isn't impressed, but Erin says that "A Felony Life" is her favorite film and Johnny agrees to see it. They watch the movie, and Erin is enraptured while Johnny is bored. After the movie is over, Erin asks him what he thinks and Johnny says that it was okay.
The theater owner, Roarke, introduces Desmond. Erin tells Johnny that she's going to share her thoughts with someone who shares her interest. She talks to Desmond outside and compliments him on his film, and asks him for tips on directing. Desmond says that he might teach a class and gets her number. Another film student, Krissy Sloane, eagerly steps up and asks Desmond to pick her phone number. He takes it from her.
Later, Desmond drives Krissy to his manor, and says that Lili won't mind that he's inviting Krissy to stay the night. Krissy says that she's seen "A Scandalous Woman" at least 50 times, and Desmond tells her that she might see it in a different light. The same thing happens to Krissy that happened to Tina, and Glenda tells her that she doesn't want her real-world experience to end.
When Desmond tells Glenda that he doesn't have a choice, Glenda says that he can fix it so they're together always. She tells him that she wants Desmond to prove he loves her, and if Lili is gone then she could stay. Desmond promises that the next time he'll put Lili in the film, but Glenda points out that he's said that before and nothing changes. She tells Desmond that if Lili is still there next time, the two of them are finished.
Lili listens as the film ends with Krissy's screams as she dies. Glenda returns to the film for her dying scene, and Desmond screams in negation as he sees Glenda "die". Lili calls down on the intercom and asks if everything is fine, and he says that he's fine and running their film again.
Johnny returns to the shop the next day, and Micki and Jack tell him about the actress' disappearances. There's nothing in the manifest that matches. She finds a reference to an old 167mm print, and goes to check Lewis' files about cursed movies. Once Micki leaves, Johnny tells Jack about his date with Erin. Jack has heard of "A Felony Life" and insists that it was a great tearjerker of its time.
When Johnny mentions that Desmond was there, Jack remembers that Desmond and Lili made "A Scandalous Life" together. Micki comes in and overhears them talking, and Jack says that after "A Scandalous Life", Desmond and Lili married and she retired. Last Jack heard, Lili was an invalid. Micki says that Lewis sold the print of "A Scandalous Life".
Desmond takes Lili out on the veranda, and she says that they should way to redecorate until he sells his screenplay. Her husband is distracted, and Lili suggests that he stay out of his study all night and get some rest. Desmond imagines pushing Lili to her death over the edge of the veranda, and she starts to fall over the edge on her own. He catches her before she can fall.
At the shop, Micki and Jack find the film's entry in the manifest. It was sold to "D.W.". Johnny is watching the news, and an anchor mentions that Tina has disappeared. He remembers Tina giving her name and number to Desmond at the theater, Krissy's parents aren't even sure if she made it to the theater from their hometown where she traveled. Johnny tells Jack and Micki about Krissy, and Jack tells Micki that they'll talk to Desmond while Johnny visits his desk sergeant contact and find out if Desmond had any contact with the other missing women.
The police show Desmond a photo of Krissy, and he claims not to recognize her. Once they leave, Desmond looks at a photo of the young Lili and remembers Glenda telling him that he wants her to kill Lili. Lili calls for Desmond over the intercom and asks him to come up to her bedroom. He makes tea for Lili and poisons it. As Desmond takes the tea to Lili, he remembers her saying earlier that he loves her and nervously drops the teacup. Lili hears the cup shatter and asks what happened, and he says that he'll get her another.
Micki arrives at Desmond's door, and when he answers it Micki says that she's a fan. She says that she wants to talk to him about the print that he brought. Desmond takes her to his screening room to talk, while Jack lurks outside. Once Micki is in the screening room, Desmond goes to check on Lili. Jack raps on the window, and after Micki unlatches it, he tells Micki to hand him the print. Meanwhile, Desmond double back, secretly peaks in, and sees Micki going through his film prints.
Desmond comes in as Micki finds "A Scandalous Woman", and asks if she's anxious to see the film. Micki has no chance but to play along, and Desmond suggests that they run it first to see if Micki likes it before she buys it.
The police from earlier drive by the manor and see Jack outside.
Desmond runs the film. Meanwhile, the two cops arrest Jack as a trespasser. Inside, Desmond puts Micki into the film, in Glenda's part. Micki is as trapped as the previous women, while Glenda asks Desmond if Lili is dead. He says that he couldn't do it, while Micki calls to Jack for help.
Glenda storms out of the screening room, and tells Desmond that as long as Lili is alive then the character will never be free of the movie. She says that if Desmond won't kill Lili, she'll find someone who will. There's a knock at the door, and Desmond tells Glenda to get back into the screening room and not let anyone see her.
The cops is at the door with Jack, and the cop explains that they found Jack outside and he claims that Micki is there. The cops insist on checking, and Glenda comes out. Jack recognizes her, and the cops assume that Glenda is Micki. Glenda says that she's never seen Jack before and she isn't in trouble. The cops believe her and take Jack away. Desmond worries that people have seen Glenda, and Glenda tells him that she keeps him locked up and she wants out. He insists that she's his, and Glenda says that she wants to be with him forever and that can only happen if Lili dies.
Lili cries for Desmond, and Desmond orders Glenda into the screening room. He then goes to Lili's room, and as she comes out in her wheelchair she says that she heard voices. Desmond says that they had a prowler, but the police took him away. He gets Lili back into her bed, and she says goodnight to him before he leaves.
As Desmond goes downstairs, he hears Micki calling for help from within the film. He confirms that Jack and the police are gone, and then goes into the screening room. The gunsels are dragging Micki away, and Desmond is unaware that Glenda has snuck out to see the real world outside of the manor.
Johnny bails Jack out of jail and they drive back to the manor. Jack tells him that the "Lili" he saw hadn't aged a day in 40 years, Desmond must have recreated Lili as she was in the movie, and Micki is in danger.
Micki tries to get the characters to change what they do, but they don't respond to her. She runs off and the gunsels give chase.
Glenda comes back inside and tells Desmond that she was just showing him how easy it would be for her to leave. She assures him that she didn't kill Lili, and only Desmond can kill her. Desmond insists that he can't kill his wife, and Glenda tells him that she's his chance to live like a human being. The man warns that Lili just can't disappear, but Glenda doesn't care and tells Desmond to kill Lili that night and set her free.
Desmond goes into the sleeping Lili's room and looks down on her. He finally kneels beside her and kisses her on the cheek, and Glenda watches expectantly from the door. Desmond picks up a pillow and smothers Lili. He removes the pillow once her death throes stop, and he goes to Glenda, who kisses him. She says that they'll get rid of Lili's body in the morning now that they have all the time in the world, and the two of them leave
Johnny and Jack pull up near the manor, and Jack leads Johnny to the window Micki unlatched earlier.
Desmond and Glenda go to the screening room to kiss, while in the film Micki continues fleeing from the gunsels. Lili comes in with a gun, and admits that she feigned death when Desmond smothered her. Glenda says that Lili loves her, and Johnny and Jack watch from the window. Meanwhile, Lili figures that Desmond hired a woman and made her up to look like her younger self. Glenda says that she's Lili, and Micki took her place in the film so she could be there.
Jack comes in, yelling Lili's name, and Glenda slips out while Lili trains her gun on Desmond. Johnny goes after Glenda, while Jack says that Micki is playing Lili's part in the movie. Micki is in the car chase in the movie, and Jack explains how the curse works. He figures that they have to find Glenda and get her back into the film, and Desmond insists that he just wanted the two of them to be together like they were. Lili figures that he loved her "pathetic character" in the film.
Glenda makes her way into town and sees "A Scandalous Woman" playing at the theater. She looks at a movie poster showing "her" and twirls around in delight. Johnny comes up and sees Glenda as she goes into the theater. He goes in after her and finds her watching the movie with herself in it. Glenda sees the enraptured fans watching her in the film, and Johnny comes in. He addresses Glenda as Lili, and says that he needs to take her back to the manor. Glenda refuses, saying that Desmond didn't tell her that the movie fans love her. She wonders why Desmond lied to her, and Johnny suggests that they go talk to her.
The film nears it finale, and Desmond tells Lily that Glenda is her. Lily says that she's not the slut that Desmond created for her money, and figures he stopped loving her because she couldn't stay young forever. Desmond tells her that she can be young and beautiful forever in the film, and Jack tells Lily not to listen to Desmond.
When Desmond says that Micki can't leave the film until someone dies, Glenda comes in with Johnny and says that it can be arranged. She says that Lily gave her a life, but Desmond kept her trapped in the film and never told her what she meant to other people. Desmond tries to grab the gun from Lili, and she accidentally shoots him. He collapses on the couch and dies, and in the film the final shootout goes down.
Lili drops the gun in shock and goes into the projector light. She says that she's been away too long, and as Jack tries to stop her, Lili takes Micki's place in the movie. Glenda laughs in triumph, yelling that she's free. Lili appears in the movie as "Glenda" as her elderly stuff and does her own death scene. In the real world, Glenda disappears in a burst of burning celluloid. Micki appears in the screening room, and Jack and Johnny embrace her as she sobs in relief.
In the film, Lili dies and the movie ends
The next day at the shop, the trio put the print in the vault. Johnny wonders what it was like to be in the movie, and she says that she was at the mercy of what was going on with her. Jack figures that Desmond lost the ability to differentiate reality from fantasy and it destroyed him, and some of them forget that a movie is only an illusion.
